Situated at the estuary of the Severn River and the Chesapeake Bay where a combination of freshwater of the Severn River and the salty water of the Chesapeake come together. Annapolis is significant in America’s naval history with its cobblestone streets, colonial-era buildings, and bustling harbor. From its early days as a port city to its pivotal role in the American Revolution and its current status as the home of the Annapolis Naval Academy, Annapolis’s naval legacy is both rich and enduring.
Annapolis: A Port City Emerges
Annapolis’s history as a major port dates back to the late 1600s, owing to its strategic location, the city rapidly became a hub for trade and commerce. Its deep waters facilitated the docking of larger vessels, making it a focal point for merchants, traders, and naval operations.
The American Revolution: Annapolis Takes Center Stage
The American Revolution brought Annapolis’s naval significance to the forefront, and our Annapolis bed and breakfast, built in the 1770s played a key role at that time. It was built as the home of Dr. James Murray, a preeminent physician to the Revolutionary Army in this area during the Revolutionary War, and was Thomas Jefferson’s doctor while Jefferson lived in Annapolis.
The city was a key supporter of the Patriot cause. Its port played a vital role in the war effort. Ships departing from Annapolis carried supplies, troops, and vital information. The city’s location also made it a prime target for British forces, leading to heightened naval defenses.
It was in Annapolis, in 1783, that General George Washington resigned his commission as the commander-in-chief of the Continental Army, marking a significant moment in the formation of the fledgling United States.
Birth of the Annapolis Naval Academy
Arguably the most significant chapter in Annapolis’s naval history began in 1845 when the United States Naval Academy was established. Under the guidance of Secretary of the Navy George Bancroft, the academy found its home in Annapolis due to its strategic and central location between the North and the South.

It is a testament to Annapolis’s continued commitment to naval excellence, producing leaders who serve with distinction in the Navy and Marine Corps.

The Civil War presented a complex situation for Annapolis. Maryland was a border state with divided loyalties. While Annapolis remained under Union control throughout the war, its strategic importance was heightened. The city became a vital transport and hospital site for the Union, especially for those wounded in battles like Antietam.
Annapolis’s Naval Academy, too, felt the tremors of the Civil War. With secessionist sentiments brewing, many Southern-born midshipmen resigned to join the Confederate forces. During the war, the academy was temporarily relocated to Newport, Rhode Island, returning to Annapolis in 1865.
World Wars and Beyond: Annapolis Naval Academy in the Global Arena

The sponsorship provides invaluable support and mentorship to midshipmen throughout their academic journey. Recognizing the rigorous demands and challenges of academy life, the program pairs midshipmen with sponsor families from the local community. These families offer a “home away from home” environment, giving midshipmen a place to relax, enjoy home-cooked meals, and spend time away from the academy’s demanding environment.
More than just extending hospitality, the connections forged between sponsors and midshipmen frequently blossom into enduring ties of camaraderie and guidance. The program elevates the midshipmen’s overall experience and bridges a deeper bond between the Naval Academy and its neighboring community. Alex and I take immense pride in witnessing the young men we support transform into community stalwarts. Reunions bring joy and laughter as we cherish the moments spent in their presence.
In 2014, the U.S. Naval Academy honored us, Joe and Alex the innkeepers of Annapolis Inn, for our exceptional support of the brigade of midshipmen for having sponsored over 200 midshipmen during our years in business by making us honorary graduates of the academy. In 2021, the U.S. Naval Academy featured us on a TV video aired on Fox Sports News on Sunday of the Veterans Day weekend to exemplify the role of sponsors.
